RAILWAY TRUCK SHORTAGE
Sir—Referring to the shortage of railway trucks, Semple should knpw that a great cause is the economic anarchy' prevailing in New Zealand. Any transport agent knows that thousands of cases of beer are shipped from the North Island to the South Island. Biscuits, groceries and hundreds of articles which can be made in Christchurch are brought from the North Island. The same unnecessary transport applies between South Island towns. Each town should have economic home rule and a planned transport organisation. The waste of timber for cases, wire and labour must cost the community many thousands of pounds annually.—Yours, etc., JOHN BURBRIDGE. September 17,* 1946.
