HOUSES FOR RAILWAY EMPLOYEES
Sir,—Having ' farmed in the Kaikoura County for the last 50 years, I take strong exception to a recent statement by Mr W. H. Gillespie, M.P. for Hurunui, that the Govemment had spent several years, completing the South Island Main Trunk railway, but had done nothing to provide houses for the permanent employees. This statement is incorrect. Thirty-seven houses had been built and the majority occupied by permanent staff, before the line was officially opened. Oh, what a day! Thanks to our Labour Government.—Yours, etc., FRANK SMITH, President, Kaikoura branch, New Zealand Labour Party. September 17, 1946.
