PROVISIONS OF NEW AWARD Alterations to the New Zealand (except Westland) Chartered Clubs EmSloyees’ Award, as announced by the ourt of Arbitration, provide for a 40hour, five-day week. Previous provisions were for a 44-hour, five and a half day week.

Another new provision in the hours of work is that night stewards shall work a straight shift of nine hours. At the expiration of four hours’ duty, night stewards ' wijl have an interval -of one hour for a ineal, during which they will attend to urgent matters which arise. In such cases the meal hour will be extended to compensate for the time lost. A week’s work for a night steward will consist of five shifts.

An employer may employ his workers on the sixth day of the week at ordinary rates for four additional hours terminating not later than Ip.m. Where he elects to do this, the employer must notify the inspector of awards accordingly. Anzac Day and Anniversary Day have been added to the special days on which overtime rates will be paid. The award provides that the minimum wage rates for members of kitchen staffs will be increased- by 5s a week. An increase of about 2s 6d has been made in the wages of head waitresses, waitresses, housemaid-waitresses, housemaids, pantrymaids, laundresses, female general hands, and all other female workers with the exception of cooks and kitchen hands. When board is not provided for any worker in the kitchen or for any other female worker in the club, he or she will be paid £1 Is a week in addition to the wages prescribed.

The basic rates for stewards has been increased by 7s 6d a week, and for other mate employees by 5s a week. New provisions have also been made for the employment of part-time workers.
