Officers For J Force.— An Officer Cadet Training Unit was opened at Yamaguchi to-day to begin training future officers for the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force in Japan. Yesterday 28 potential candidates from units of J Force were examined by a selection board consisting of six highranking New Zealand officers. Twentyone candidates survived the examination. The course of instruction, which will cover mostly infantry subjects, will last for five weeks. After holding probationary commissions for a month, the successful candidates will become fully qualified officers.—Kure, May 2. Clash in Refugee Camp.— Two Jews were killed and five were seriously inured in a clash during May-Day celebrations at a refugee camp at Reggio. The trouble began when White Russian Jews objected to the observance of May Day by Pro-Soviet Jews. The Solice opened fire tp restore order.— tome, May 5, Abdication Denied.— The Royal House of Savoy has announced that all rumours of the pending abdication of King Victor Emmanuel of Italy are unfounded, reports the Rome radio.— London, May 5.
Boycott of Investiture.— Congress Party Ministers in the new Madras Government boycotted the investiture
ceremony at which Lieutenant-General Sir Archibald Nye was sworn in as Governor of Madras.—Madras. May 6. Speed Car Racing in Australia.— Thirty thousand saw New Zealand beat Australia in the second speed car test match by 26 points to 22. Jack Malcolm’s brilliant driving gained New Zealand a win in the captains’ heat. Australia won the first test. The : third test will be on May 18.—Bris- < bane May 6. < Japanese bil Found By Dutch.— “ The Dutch authorities have found about . 400,000 gallons of Japanese oil and lubricants hidden on Sabang Island off the north-west tip of Sumatra,” says ’ the Netherlands News Agency, which ' adds that the Netherlands East Indies ' Petrol Board has taken over the stocks. . —Batavia. May 5. ( Explosion in Czechoslovakia.—The mysterious explosion of two magazines near Terezin killed three Czech sol- • diers, injured many others. and wrecked three villages.
