CARE OF MENTAL PATIENTS

FOUNDATION FORMED IN AMERICA WASHINGTON. May 5. A ■ former Judge of the Supreme Court, Mr Justice Owen Roberts, has announced the formation of a National Mental Health Foundation, to help interpret to the public the nature of mentsl illness, and to seek higher standards of mental care and treatment in hospitals.

Mr- Justice Roberts said that approximately 8.000,000 persons in the United States needed psychiatric care and treatment. More than half the hospital beds in America were occupied by mental patients, yet therewere less than 4000 psychiatrists to give adequate care to the mentally ill. Joining Mr Justice Roberts in sponsoring the foundation are Mrs Pearl Buck. Miss Helen Hayes. Mr Henry Luce. Mrs Ele?nor Roosevelt, Mrs Truman, Mr Sidney Hillman. Mr Thomas Mann, and others.
