SUPREME COURT

— * — MONDAY, (Before Mr Justice Northcroft.) Fine Imposed A fine of £25 and disqualification from holding a driver’s licence for three years were the penalties imposed on Henry William Starnler, a truck-driver, who apr peered for sentence on charges of failing to stop and with falling to render assistance, after an accident. His Honour said he was prepared to accept the plea that accused’s action was* one of impulse, but a substantial fine would be imposed. As accused had shown himself unworthy to drive a car he must find some other occupation for the time being. For accused, Mr C. S. Thomas said that he had struck a cyclist with his car in Barbadoes street. Visibility was, poor and accused had been watching another cyclist when he struck the one in question. In an act of panic, he did not stop. As there were a number of people'about at the time, the case waS not comparable with one of leaving a seriously injured person on a deserted road. Placed on Probation John Francis Hugh Mercer, who appeared for sentence on a charge of theft, was placed on probation for tWo years. Mr W. R. Lascelles said there were exceptional mitigating circumstances in tjie case, and since accused was a first offender, he suggested that suppression of his name already granted by two Magistrates, should be again ordered. His Honour said that having examined the case he would accept the plea of mitigating circumstances, but no order would be made for suppression of the name. Discharged from Bankruptcy Discharges from bankruptcy • were granted in respect of Wilfred Arthur Hopkins, cartage contractor, and Raymond Donald Kennerley, laundry proprietor.
