HANDICAPS DECLARED MELBOURNE, July 30. Lawrence, regarded as the best horse in Australia, has been given the topweight for both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups with 9-9 and 9-6 respectively. The only horse to win the Melbourne Cup in recent years w T ith more than 9-6 was Peter Pan, which won in 1934 with 9-10. There are 23 rejected nominations, including three New Zealanders—Amorlad, Caithness, and Fortune’s Smile—because the horses came within the restrictions imposed on account of the fodder-short-age. The top-weights and New Zealanders a. as follows: CAULFIELD CUP, one mile and a half.— Lawrence 9-9; Amana 9-8; Craigie 9-6; Counsel, Sirius, Versailles 9-5; Flight 9-4; Modulation, Simmering 9-2; Drum Net, Sleepy Fox 0-1; First In 8-12; High Play, Immediate 8-8; Royal Flight 8-7; Typhoon 8-5; Orakau 7-8. MELBOURNE CUP, two miles.—Lawrence 9-6; Amana 9-3; Counsel, Craigie, Sirius*9-2; Flight. The depot in Bates’ Building, Worcester street (opposite the Automobile Association rooms) will be open for the receipt of clothing for UNRRA from Monday to Friday between 10 ajn. and 12 a.m. and 2 p.m. and 4 pan.
