FARM WORKERS
, Sir,—l heartily endorse the remarks of “Disgusted Skilled Worker” under the heading of ‘‘Farm Workers ’ in “The Press" of last Tuesday.. Although my wages have not gone up in the last two years, I do not complain, as with extras I am still a few shillings above the award. This is no gift, as it is well earned. But it does annoy to thinkthat during this time I have not had one Saturday afternoon off, and hail, rain, or show, have never been told to go home early excepting on December 24 one year, when I arrived home at 4.30 p.m.—a Christmas special. We all know farming has its rush seasons, but I'maintain that we could have 26 Saturday afternoons off during the year. For my part this would check the desire for a town job. Will skilled farm workers ever be recognised as such?— Yours, etc., I. WONDER. June 21, 1945.
