PLANNED ECONOMY
Sir,—Mr M.P., believes in controls; Mr Richards believes in a planned economy; Mr Richards is against monopolies, because they place great power in the hands of a comparatively few men. His solution is to socialise the State. He who fears the power of monopolists would make one great monopoly, the State. He would, place still greater power in the Jhands of fewer men. Why should the Socialists be trusted and not other men? Because the Socialists would have the welfare of the masses at heart. Mr Richards is confident that he will be one of the controllers. But if the planned economy were controlled by his opponents then ,1 feel sure he would be heard talking of tyranny. To those who belong to neither of these groups, but who know how power corrupts all men. a planned economy of any kind spells individual slavery.—Yours, etc., POLEMIC. April 7, 1945.
