OBITUARY

MR T. H. LOWRY (P.A.) WELLINGTON. Sept. 24. One of New Zealand’s leading pastoralists, noted for his interest in sport and generous gifts to patriotic funds both in this war and the last, Mr Thomas Henry Lowry, of Okawa, Hawke’s Bay. died on Saturday, aged 79. Mr Lowry was born at Napier. He was educated at Christ’s College from 1881 to 1883 and was a member of the first eleven and first fifteen in 1882. He later represented Hawke’s Bay at cricKet and football. He studied at Jesus College, Cambridge, and after returning to New Zealand he_ took up sheepfarming. He was president of the Christ’s College Old Boys’ Association in 1916. He founded the /T. H. Lowry Trust, which provided funds for Lowry huts for the 2nd N.Z.E.F. in the Middle East. Mr Lowry was the father of Mr T. C. Lowry, w-ho was captain of the New Zealand cricket team w-hich toured England in 1927, and was captain and manager of the 1931 team. Another son is Mr J. N. Lowry, a Cambridge tennis blue. His daushters are Mrs A. P.’F. Chapman and Mrs R. H. Bettington, of Sydney. Mr Lowry was well known as an owner and breeder of racehorses, and his stud at “Okawa” produced some notable horses. The first horse to bring Mr Lowry into prominence was Downfall, and other horses he owned were Desert Gold, the famous mare. Balboa, Bobrikoff, Estland, and Finmark.
