DRY WEATHER ON PENINSULA
FATTENING OF LAMBS AFFECTED
The dry weather on Banks Peninsula during November and December is affecting lamb fattening considerably, as well as the dairying industry, and all other farm operations. The rainfall for November at Akaroa was 80 points, and for December 44 points, although the rainfall for the year totalled 56.17 in, which was well above the average. , , .. , Prospects of getting large drafts of fat lambs away are not bright, as a very wet spring has been follower by a dry summer, and the heavy spring growth has dried off badly. The fat lamb season on Banks Peninsula is therefore likely to be much later than usual, even if rain is experienced. Buyers operating in the district at present say that the percentage of fat lambs in flocks is lower than usual, and weights are a good deal below the average. As heavy-weight lambs are urgently needed this season for overseas shipment, the position is an unfortunate one. Good rains now would improve the position considerably.
