KAIKOURA RAINFALL
WETTEST YEAR ON RECORD
Although the months of November and December were very dry, causing grain crops to ripen off much earlier than usual and producing rank growth of grass after heavy rain in September and October, with a consequent decrease in dairy production, last year was the wettest recorded at the Kaikoura town weather station. The total rainfall of 43.66 in on 115 rain days was 9.56 in above the average of 34.1 in, on an average of 99 rain days, over the last 13 years.
At the Grange road station there was a total rainfall of 58.74 in, which fell on 125 days, compared with 57.99 in, on 132 days, during 1942. The total rainfall of 43.28 in at the Lynton Downs weather station was 1.73 in less than the rainfall for 113 days in 1942. The following are the reports for December from weather stations In the Kaikoura County:— Kaikoura town (Mr C. A. Jensen): rain fell on nine days for a total of 1.20 in, the maximum of 35 points being recorded on December 3. In December, 1942, the rainfall was 4.211n, falling on eight rain days. Grange road (Mr F. Emms) registered 3.63 in for 10 rain days, 81 points of which fell on December 5, compared with a rainfall of 6.47 in for 12 days during the corresponding period of 1942. Lynton Downs (Mr E. E. Weavers) recorded a rainfall of l.Vlin, the maximum of 43 points falling on December 2. compared with a rainfall of 3.82 in on 10 rain days in December, 1942. The wettest month in 1943 was June, with a rainfall of 10.62 in, while the heaviest rainfall in 1942 was IT.llin in May.
