FAILURE TO DISPLAY PRICE LISTS
PROSECUTIONS TO BE INSTITUTED
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Feb. 24. The reports of inspectors from various parts of New Zealand showed that many retailers were failing to comply with the provisions of clause 16 of the Control of Prices Emergency Regulations Amendment No. 3, said Mr Justice Hunter, president of the Price Tribunal, to-day. This clause, said his Honour, provided that every retailer who sold goods which were the subject of a price order must keep a copy of the price order, or statement of prices fixed, prominently displayed in his shop, so that customers might freely consult it without having to ask for permission to do so. The regulations became law on December 15, 1942, and as retailers had now had ample time to make themselves familiar with its provisions and arrange to receive copies of price orders from the Government Printer or their trade associations, prosecutions were being instituted for breaches.
The attention of the public, especially housewives, was also drawn to the provisions of the regulations, which enabled them to ascertain easily the maximum prices for a large proportion of goods now the subject of price orders, of which about 120 had been issued.
