SPORTING

TURF GOSSIP

Leading Horsemen For the first time for some years a South Island horseman has gained the lead in the winning jockeys' list, as compiled by the Official Calendar. He is W. F. Ellis, whose two wins at Woodvilie last week took his total for this season to 30. or two more than W. Broughton, and N. Holland fills third place with 16 wins, and \V. Hooton is next with 15. Then follow P. Atkins and A. Jenkins 14, D. Redstone 13, I. Galvin, K. Wilson, and L. J. Ellis 12, J. Williamson, V. Sellars, and M. Caddy 11. and B. H. Morris and E. Dye 10.

Winning Trainers In the trainers' list, F. Smith has had 18 wins and is six in front of H. Dulieu and R. H. Martin. A. E. Didham and F. W. Ellis are next with 11 each, and others are; H. Telford, G. New, and P. Burgess 9, B. H. Morris, L. G. Morris, C. J. Thompson, and R. S. Bagby 8. J. H. Jefferd, D. Arnott, J. J. Waller, T. Verner, and J. Phillips 7, A. Winder. D. Cotton. R. McLellan, J. L. Muir, W. Bromby, A. Cook, and A. S. Ellis 6.

Left on Coast The Mosgiel owner-trainer D. P. Wilson had Tring and True Mate at the Kumara and Westland meetings, but will not be represented at the Greymouth fixture this week as he has returned home with them. During his visit to the West Coast Wilson sold Big Top (Ringmaster—Trivet), who ran third at Kumara, to Mr J. Coyle, of Hokitika, for whom he will be trained by C. J. Walshe at Omoto.

Change of Stable Eulogist has made satisfactory progress since his unlucky trip to Trentham in January, and will be trained by C. Emerson.

Satisfactory First Effort Mr A. W. Ebbett, owner of Erndale, bought Acreman a week before the Waikato meeting for 400 guineas, and the gelding finished a close third in the Frankton Hurdles at last Saturday s fixture. In Victoria

One of the best two-year-olds racing in Victoria is a recent winner in Portway He cost 325 guineas as a yearling, and is by Portofino (son of Sansovino) from Otway, by Woorak from Otford, by Tressady from Otterform, a sister to Boniform.

TROTTING NOTES

Ashburton Trotting Club Entries for the New Zealand Sapling Stakes, 1944, New Zealand Champion Stakes, 1944, and New Zealand Futurity Stakes. 1945 (all for present yearlings) close to-day at 5 p.m. —6 Juvenile Pacers An attraction at Addington on Saturday will be what is described as a parade of two-year-olds. This event is practically a race over seven furlongs, just far enough for juveniles at this stage of the season. ■ The last parade held at Addington was at the matinee meeting, and it served to introduce in Bel Hamed and Imperial Lady two of the fastest young pacers ever raced in New Zealand, and a pair that staged one of the most exciting races seen in Auckland for some time. The field for this week’s race does not include Bel Hamed, but Imperial Lady is engaged. Opposed to her will be a smart pacer in Acropolis, a two-year-old by Dillon Hall from Seaworthy, trained by R. B. Berry. Acropolis is regarded as a fine young pacer, and may be the popular choice even against such a good one as Imperial Lady, the half-sister to Gold Bar. Noble Scott is a Roydon Lodge product by U. Scott from Widow Volo, Netherby by Gaillard—Watty’s Wish, M. Holmes’s second string for the Sapling Stakes, and News Agent by Grattan Loyal —Emily de Oro. All these horses are engaged in the first division of the Parade, while those that have already shown speed and are to race in the second division include Scottish Brogue and Scottish Emperor, both by U. Scott from Shoelace and Princess Napoleon respectively. Golden Dancer is a filly by Quite Sure from Tapdancer, and some interest may be taken in the form of a filly by Dillon Hall from Tondeleyo, a sister to Indianapolis. The introduction of the Parade to this meeting makes necessary the early start of 11 a.m., and as competitors must be off the track before 11.40, no delay will be allowed. Bracketed

At Addington on Saturday, the following horses will be bracketed on the totalisator: —A. I. Rattray Handicap: Clockwork and Bayard, Bronze Eagle and Burt Scott, Peter Smith and Fine Art. Midsummer Handicap: Great Blaze and Accountant. Trotting Free-for-All; Lament and Within. Metropolitan Free-for-All; Accountant and Bayard, Fine Art and Peter Smith. A Small Field

Only seven horses have been paid up for in the Halswell Handicap at Addington on Saturday, but the betting public may find a real problem in this race. There is not a good-class pacer engaged, although recent running by Worthy Cross suggests him as the logical favourite. At the Wellington meeting on February 6 he was beaten by a neck by Loyal Friend in the Summer Handicap after doing 3min 17 3-ssec, and at Addington on Saturday he finished third to Battle Colours and

Loyal Friend in 3min 19 4-ssec, and later finished second to Shadow Maid in a mile and a quarter race against goodclass sprinters. Not another horse in the race has such impressive form as that shown by Worthy Cross. GREYMOUTH J.C. ACCEPTANCES (P.A.) GHEYMOUTH, Feb. 24.
