HON. H. T. ARMSTRONG

TRIBUTES PAID BY

PARLIAMENT (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Dec. 2. Tributes to the Hon. H. T. Armstrong were paid both in the House of Representatives and ~the Legislative Council to-day. Both Houses adjourned during the afternoon until to-morrow morning as a mark of respect to his memory.

Moving a motion of appreciation of Mr Armstrong’s services and of condolence with his relatives, the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser) .-aid that Mr Armstrong had been a distinguished son of New Zealand. His record in legislative and administrative enactments had not been equalled, and the list of those enactments would be a lasting memorial to his earnestness and sincerity. The motion was seconded by the Leader of the Opposition (Mr S. G. Holland), who said that all deplored the passing of one whose friendshin everyone was glad to claim. His passing left a gap that would be hard to fill.

Twenty other members, including seven Ministers, also paid tributes, and the House rose at 5.6 p.m. until 10.30 a.m. to-morrow as a mark of respect to his memory.

Regret at the death of the Hon. H. T. Armstrong and sympathy with his relatives was expressed by the Lyttelton Harbour Board yesterday. Mr Armstrong was a member of the board from 1921 to 1936 and was chairman for one year.
