PUNISHMENT BY CANE
Sir,—“ One Who Has Experienced’’ in “The Press” to-day. advocates flogging in schools. For lying or stealing I certainly agree with him: but for minor offences, no. My experience at a military public school, Wellington College, Berkshire, harks back to 1870, when the then headmaster was Edward W. Benson, later created Archbishop of Canterbury. For a mistake in Greek construing I received at bis hand six cuts with a cano across the- shoulders and six on each hand. My right hand was useless for a fortnight after, the thumb bone having, neen badly bruised. Since that time L have loathed Greek. A book on the college, written by General Sir lan Hamilton who was there with me. also gives his experiences, which are worth reading.—Yours, etc., GEORGE W. HUNGERFORD. November 21, 1942.
