SUGAR FOR CASUAL WORKERS
October 2, 1942.
Sir,—Recently we had several jobs done by contractors woodcutting, lime sowing, shingle carting, sthke splitting, etc. There would be two or three men for the day and away at night. When I went to collect the sugar ration, I was allowed loz for every two hours each man worked. In an eight or nine-hour day-in the country, the men have five meals, and if the weather is hot, they certainly need two cups of tea when morning and afternoon lunch is sent out. The ounce of sugar is only sufficient for the tea and there is none for preparing the meals. The latest information is that for shearers we will be allowed 2Joz of sugar a day for each shearer. May I ask why for these other casual jobs we are not allowed the same quantity as for shearers, and also what will be the rrtion for harvesters, for haymaking will commence very soon?— Yours, etc., ' A FARMER’S WIFE.
