BLENHEIM-CLARENCE TRAIN
Sir,—Now that the train is running from Blenheim to the Clarence and back in a day, could not it be possible for the Railway Department to run a train even once a month on a return journey from the Clarence to Blenheim? We are penalised enough in the backblocks having to pay extra in freight on everything that comes into the district. As it is now, we can go to Blenheim by the return train in the afternoon, but if we have shopping to do, it means two nights away. That is impossible, with only a day to spare and accommodation hard t-> obtain. We can certainly go to Kaikoura, but time is short there. Surely a worker is entitled to a day’s pleasure a month, and he likes to go to town occasionally.— Yours, etc., SNAKE GULLY. October 22, 1942. [On this matter being referred to the Railway .Department, it was stated that it was not possible to provide such a service at the present time. The location of engines and staff does not permit the service desired by “Snake Gully,” but in any case the ■prospective traffic would not justify the expense that would be incurred. The matter has been noted for consideration when the line is extended further south.]
