WATERSIDE WORKERS AND TRAMWAYMEN | Appeals for waterside workers, tramway employees, and members of the Emergency Fire Service were heard by the No. 2 Armed Forces Appeal Board , yesterday. Mr J. S. Barnett presided and with him were Messrs S, L. Wright and H. McCaw. Mr E, D. Thompson appeared for the Crown and Captain S. Bowron represented the Army. When the appeals for waterside workers were heard, the Waterfront Controller (Captain H. L, Brockett) said the Waterfront Commission appealed only tor A class men, There was an acute shortage of labour, and sometimes 224 men had to be emploved above the union strength. On other days only a few men were required. He did not know where all the extra men came from, but on Saturdays there seemed to be plenty. There was a working membership of the union of 482 One overseas ship required 370 men and the steamer express 52 men. Mr J. Flood, national president of the Waterside Workers’ Union, said the Lyttelton branch had a list of about 200 applicants for membership, but many of these were between 60 and 65, were not suitable for the work, or were engaged in essential industries already. Men were still being taken into the union. Tramway Appeals Appeals for five motormen, six conductors, and four other employees were made by the Christchurch Tramway Board. The general manager (Mr H. E Jarman) said that the board was obliged to appeal for conductors as they were the only source from which motormen could be obtained. Twenty women were to be employed as conductors, and the men they replaced would be trained as motormen. The board was eight motormen short now, and when the traffic became heavier in the summer it would he 16 short. Appeals had not been made originally for motormen, and losses had been caused by men enlisting, reaching the pension age, and resigning because of kkness, Emergency Fire Service Decision on appeals for the Emergency Kirn Service men were reserved. They included an appeal for the adjutant (C. McKenzie), The Fire Controller (Mr A. Morrison) said McKenzie, who had Joined 17 months ago, was also the commander of a division of the service. He was the only full-time officer of the service The service was still 41 short of establishment at Lyttelton and 28 short at Christchurch. He did not know where he could get replacements. When appeals for nine employees of Andersons, Ltd., were heard, the works manager in Christchurch (Mr J H Clarke) said the company was engaged exclusively on work of national importance. McFarlane, J. W. Hill, J. L. Bains, C. H. Salomon (supported by District Fire Controller). On the application of the reservists, the following appeals by the Waterfront Control Commission were dismissed:—?. E. McNulty, A. G. Tyro, and C. C. F, Black. The following appeals by the Tramway Board were adjourned sine die: —L. R. Babbage, W. I. Leonard, L. C, J. Southon. B. F. T. Williams, C. D. Wilkie (motormen), A. W. W. Mansfield H. E. Davis, 1. K Patrick, J. Pettersen, F. A. J. James (conductors). Southon’s appeal was sup. ported by the District Fire Controller, Appeals for R. H. Crichton, conductor, and H. C. Archbold, permanent way employee, were dismissed, as Crichton Is in the Army, and Archbold has left the board’s employ. An appeal for L. J. W. Johnson, coach builder, was dismissed, and those for C. R. Martin, panel-beater, and A. C. Pratt, draughtsman and shift engineer, were adjourned sine die, both men to join the tramway E.P.S. The following appeals by Andersons, Ltd., were adjourned sine die:—W. J. Syme, works mafiager at Lyttelton, R. S. C. Kicrnan, fitter and turner, J. D. McNamara, engineering machinist. J. T. McKee, fettler, J. E. C. Pluck, fitter, J. S, J. Miller, journeyman fitter, E. Comfort, fitter, D. Milne, engineer’s blacksmith. The appeals for Syme and Pluck, who is also at Lyttelton, were supported by the Navy Department. They are not to be available In an emergency, The other men are to do Home Guard service, with the exception .. Miller, whose appeal was supported by the District Fire Controller. He is to continue with the E.P.S. An appeal for I. R. Stacey, apprentice draughtsman, was dismissed. An appeal against overseas service by the wife of D. J. W. Tierney was dismissed. The immediate release of R. Harriott, who is a grade 111 man. was recommended, following an appeal by his wife. Other appeals were dealt with as follows;—R. A. L. Jones and Keith S. Styles, boot factory employees (Duckworth Turner and Company, Ltd.), dismissed: John Leslie Woodfleld, crane driver (Smokeless Fuel and Briquettes (Canterbury), Ltd.), dismissed, reservist not to go into camp before November 30.
