JEWS IN FRANCE
PROTESTS AGAINST ILL-TREATMENT LONDON, Sept. 28 Two members of Laval’s Cabinet, M. Barlhelemy (Minister of Justice) and M. Romicr (Minister without Portfolio), have threatened to resign if the persecution of the Jews in France continues, reports Reuter’s correspondent on the French frontier. Many priests and members of religious orders are wearing the Star of David as a protest against the persecutions. “Gringoirc” and other collaborationist newspapers declare that 2,700.000 Jews are in France, and are swamping the Mediterranean coast. Neutrals estimate that there could not have been more than 400,000 Jews in France in 1941. The exaggerated figure of 2.700,000 is obviously quoted with the object of stirring up the French antiSemitic movement, which so far has no support. The Berlin radio quotes a Vichy report that General Nogues, GovernorGeneral of Morocco, has established concentration camps for Jews. Lyons radio reported to-night that Marshal Retain has protested to the German authorities in Paris against the ill-treatmeni of French nationals in Alsace-Lorraine. He declared that the Germans were violating the terms of the Armistice. Two bodies of French doctors have sent in their resignations to the French Ministry of Health as a protest against German methods. A Vichy report states that “Le Matin” has revealed a vast wave of arson, particularly in occupied France, where many crops, farms, and warehouses have been destroyed.
