MADAGASCAR CAMPAIGN
MORE FRENCH FORCES SURRENDER
ANNOUNCEMENT BY MR CHURCHILL (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright.) (Rcc. 11 p.m.) LONDON. Sept. 29. The surrender of more of the French forces in the southern part of Madagascar was announced in the House of Commons by Mr Churchill. Asked about the resistance put up by the French forces in Madagascar, Mr Churchill said: “I think the French resistance was mainly symbolic.” According'to a Vichy communique the French positions in Madagascar are being stubbornly defended. The British launched several attacks 40 miles south of Antananarivo. The Vichy radio says Marshal Petain has sent a message to the people of Madagascar through the GovernorGeneral (M. Annet) stating: ‘‘Britain may occupy Madagascar, but will not overcome the obstacle which holds out against machine-guns and cannon—your determined will to remain French.” The Paris radio quotes a report from Lisbon that two new contingents of United States troops have landed in South Africa.
