STOCK EXCHANGES CHRISTCHURCH BUSINESS SMALL Although buying quotations were maintained at levels obtaining throughput the week only a small volume of business was written. Government stocks are particularly firm and . sellers were not disposed even to, meet the market at the higher levels. Banks, insurance, and loan and agency stocks were required at late rates, and buyers of frozen meats were Inclined to raise their limits. Woollen companies were also in demand, but the margin between buyers and sellers was too wide to enable buyers to fill their orders. Amongst the miscellaneous, business was recorded in British Tobaccos, which changed hands at 40s, and New Zealand Farmers' Co-operative first preference advanced Is on the previous day's sales, a parcel changing hands yesterday at 645. Although the turnover for the week has been disappointing, the general state of the market is very healthy and there appears to be no dearth of buyers. Sellers at market rates are extremely difficult to find. Holders of sound stocks prefer evidently to retain investments that are giving a reasonable return. The Stock Exchange will be closed on Monday, September 28. Sale on ’Change: Listed Stock—2oo British Tobacco, 40s. Sales-Reported: Listed Stocks.—loo Bank of New Zealand, 40s;. 100 N.Z. Farmers’ Co-op. (first pref.), 645.
