SEARCH FOR OIL IN NEW ZEALAND

WORLD’S LARGEST PLANTS EMPLOYED (P.A.) AUCKLAND. Sept. 25. Referring to the search for oil in New Zealand, the Minister of Mines (the Hon. P. <C. ’..ebb) said that the two largest and most modern drilling plants in the world began operations this week, one at Cape Terrace, near Kumara, in the South Island, and the other at Mount Stewart, in the Manawatu district. Both were being operated by the Superior Oil Company. A third large drill was expected to begin boring in a fortnight in the Rangitikei district, near Marton. Mr Webb said that the New Zealand Petroleum Company’s bore at Devon, near New Plymouth, was down .6000 feet. At Midhirst. Taranaki, the company had drilled 11,000 feet, the deepest bore in the Southern Hemisphere, but the well proved dry. “We have som. of the best drilling experts in the world operating in the Dominion,” added the Minister.
