APPEALS AGAINST SERVICE

FIRE BRIGADE CASES HEARD DECISIONS OF BOARD If the men appealed for were ordered into the Army, the brigade would lose 20 per'cent, of its permanent staff, stated Mr A. Morrison, Superintendent of the Central Fire Brigade, in support of 30 appeals heard before the Armed Forces Appeal Board yesterday. Adjournments sine die were allowed in all cases. The reservists were:—George Victor Empson, John Francis Burborough, John Frederick Marigold, Charles' Henry Robinson, Roy Charles Schwass, Henry James Wilson Waddell, Charles Stewart Campbell, Norman William Waghorn (all brigadesmen), and Otto Francis Denson and Alister Ambrose Bruce (drivers). The reservists, said Mr Morrison, had been permanent members of the brigade for periods varying from seven months to 12 years. They were all indispensable. The last three vacancies on the permanent staff had been filled by members of the Auxiliary Fire Service, he added. Mr J. S. Barnett presided, and with him were Messrs S. L. Wright and G. T. Thurston. Captain S. Bovvron appeared for the Army, and Mr E. D, Thompson represented the Crown. L. Bull), dismissed, reservist not to be called before October 31; William Joseph O’Halloran, engineer’s apprentice (H. Smith, Ltd.), adjourned sine die, reservist to join the Home Guard; Herbert Craig Gwynne, driver (Sunderland Bros., Ltd.), dismissed, reservist not to be called up before January 1, 1943; Allan Richard Thomas Armstrong (Butler Timber Company, Ltd.), adjourned sine die, reservist to join the Home Guard; Clifford Walter Syddall, clerk (Director of National Service), adjourned sine die; lan Watson Fraser, minister of/religion (appeal by the Moderator of the Presbyterian Church), withdrawn by leave of the board, subject to the reservist being posted as a chaplain; David Owen Williams, minister of religion (appeal by the Rev. W. Walker), adjourned sine die; Colin Lindsay, accountant (Miss J. A. Sparkes). withdrawn by leave of the board; Nolan Francis Cutler, presser (Smartwear Manufacturing Company, Ltd.), withdrawn by leave of the board; Henry Gilford Davison, electrician (Director of National Service), adjourned sine die.

RESERVE BANK STATEMENT OF ASSETS AND LIABILITIES (P.A.) WELLINGTON, September 25. Following is a statement of assets and liabilities of the Reserve Bapk of New Zealand at the close of business on September 21, with the corresponding figures in the previous statement in parenthesis: Liabilities.—General reserve fund, £1,500,000; bank notes. £26,856,971 10s (£26,884,279): demand liabilities: (a) State, £8,546,375 (£10,397,021); (b) banks, £23,357,396 (£21,401,010): (c) other, £774,010 (£655,798): liabilities in currencies other than New Zealand, £49,397 (£15,401): other liabilities, £1,269,876 (£1,240,436); total, (N.Z.) £62,354,027 (£61,951,267). Assets.—Reserve: Gold, £2,801,878 (£2,801,878); sterling exchange in New Zealand currency, £26,699,908 (£25,183,609); subsidiary coin, £25,212 (£25,211): advances to Marketing Department, £4,811,485 (£6.014,132): advances for other purposes. £22,300,000 (£22,300,000); invest, ments, £4,146,340 (£4,146,340); other assets, £1,569,203 (£1,462,320); total. New Zealand currency, £62,354,027 (£61,951,267).

COMPANY NEWS Smith and Smith Profit.—The directors of Smith and Smith, Ltd., report that trading for the year ended June 30 resulted in a gross profit of £122,347. After meeting working expenses, subsidising staff superannuation by £2150, and making what the directors consider adequate provision for depreciation, £22,240 remains. This, with £B2IO brought forward from last year, and £2OBO dividends received, leaves £32,531 to be dealt with. It is proposed that £17,050 be taken to reserve for current taxes. Also that £7087 10s be paid as a iy 3 per cent, dividend on ordinary shares. Five per cent, on preference shares, amounting to £2250, has been paid during the financial year. It is recommended that a similar sum be placed aside to cover payments due in the ensuing year, leaving £6143 to carry forward. The company’s paid-up capital remains at £139,500. Reserves (excluding for taxes and dividends), plus amount carried forward, total £95,275. The company has assumed liability for investment of £32,700 in New Zealand Government war loans. Guarantee Corporation.—The directors of the New Zealand Guarantee Corporation recommend a dividend of IJd a share free of social and national security taxes. MINING Maori Gold, Ltd.—The Maori Gold return for the week ended September 25 was 220z for 108 hours from 11,500 yard*.
