OBITUARY

MR W. SCOTT

The death occurred recently, at the age 9! 61 years, of Mr W. Scott, of Fairlie. Mr Scott was well known for his interest in public affairs. He was for many years a member of the Fairlie County Council, of which he was chairman last year. He was 'also a member of the South Canterbury Electric Power Board and of the Timaru High Schools’ Board of Governors. Since the outbreak of war, he was associated with the Armed Forces Appeal Board (Area IDA).

The death occurred recently of Mr John Taylor Hay, J;P., a respected resident of the Waimate district, aged 90 years. Mr Hay was born in the Orkney Islands in 1853, and came to New Zealand in the ship Peter Denny, landing at Port Chalmers. He engaged in farming work,, and in 1885 tecame farm overseer at Lincoln College, where he served for 14 years. In 1899 he purchased a portion of the Waikakahi estate, which he farmed successfully until his retirement to live in Waimate. Mr Hay was a successful competitor at ploughing matches in earlier years. He served on the Lincoln and Morven School Committees, and was a member of the South Canterbury Hospital Board and also of the Waimate Farmers’ Union and Waimate Agricultural and Pastoral Association, being treasurer of the former body for 30 years, and president of the latter for a term. He served as a member of the Waimate Borough Council for six years, and was an ardent member of the Presbyterian Church, being an office bearer until his death. He was at one time n active member of the Waimate Bowling Club. He is survived by a family of four sons and three daughters: Messrs J, C. Hay (Morven), C. R. Hay (Hakataramea), W. L. Hay (Waimate), and E. G. Hay (Morven), Mrs A. Craig (Christchurch), Miss Nellie Hay,, and Miss Millie Hay (Waimate),
