MAGISTRATE’S COURT

MONDAY (Before Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M.) REMANDED Thomas Davie, a salesman, aged 47, was remanded to September 28 on a charge of obtaining £3 by false pretences from Mabel Gertrude Robertson. THEFT OF COAT AND MONEY Norman Stanley Buchanan, a labourer, aged 26 (Mr A. C. Brasslngton), pleaded guilty to the theft of a fur coat valued at £ls 15s, and 25s in money, the property of Phyllis Louisa Stevens. Mr Brasslngton said the offence was the result of a sudden Impulse. Buchanan was due to be examined for the Army. “Army discipline is the one thing that might do some good with this .man, though I am a bit sceptical," said the Magistrate He remanded the accused to September 28- to ascertain the result of the Army medical examination. THEFT AT PARTY Cyril Arthur Hensley, a labourer, aged 37, was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment with hard labour for the theft of £6 Os 9d in money, the property of Elsie May Pulley. Senior-Detective H. Nuttall said the money was stolen from the coat of a woman attending a party at Rangiora. Hensley had been' before the Court on 55 occasions since 1917. SIX CHARGES OF THEFT

Robert William Harris, a labourer, aged 21, pleaded guilty to six charges of theft —a camp stove and equipment valued at £6 15s 6d; a .32 calibre revolver valued at ss; an alarm clock, oil can, and wallet valued at £1 (these offences being at Greymouth); £3 in money, the property of W. H. Stroud (Christchurch); a .22 rifle telescopic sight and automatic hand trap valued at £4; and a foun-tain-pen valued at £1 10s (the latter offences at Wellington in 1940).

Senior-Detective H. Nuttall said the accused was released from the Aimy to work in the West Coast mines. He had no previous convictions. The accused was remanded for a week for a report by the Probation Officer. MAINTENANCE CASES (Before Mr F. F. Reid, S.M.) Elizabeth Robinson, who proceeded against Abraham Robinson, was granted a maintenance order for 21s a week for herself and each child.

A maintenance order for 20s a week was made against Patrick Joseph McGllligan, in respect of each of his two children. Past maintenance was fixed at £lO.
