APPEALS AGAINST SERVICE

♦ DECISIONS OF BOARD An appeal by Roberts Fish Supply to the Armed Forces Appeal Board yesterday for the release of two men, Charles V. Martin and Sergeant C. L. Dennis, from military service, brought comments from Mr J. T. Thurston, a member of the board, Captain S. Bowron representing the military authorities, and Mr A. C. Perry representing the appellant. Mr Perry said that Martin had been appealed for previously, but since then the position had changed and Mrs Roberts, owner of the business, had thought it only fair to place fresh facts before the board. Martin’s work since then, had not been altogether satisfactory, he had refused to do overtime work, and had an upsetting influence on the staff. Sergeant Dennis, a grade 1 man, aged 48 years, employed in a military camp, was being appealed for, and the appellant would not proceed with the appeal for Martin if Dennis could be released. When asked by the chairman (Mr J. S. Barnett) for the Army’s report on Sergeant Dennis, Captain Bowron said he was a good soldier and very- efficient In work on rations. He objected strongly, however, to the attitude of the appellant, who, realising that a man was not showing real efficiency in civilian .work, wished to exchange him for a man who was doing a good job in the. Army. Mr Thurston: You have put the position in a nutshell, Captain,. and have saved me the trouble of expressing the same opinions. Mr Perry said there had been a misconception, and Mrs Roberts had been more than fair In placing the true position before the board. The appellant had offered a man for overseas service and wanted one who was not available for that service. The appeal for Martin was dismissed and Dennis’s release from camp recommended.
