SHORTAGE OF FIREMEN

REPORT TO AKAROA COUNCIL The question of personnel of the Akaroa Fire Brigade was raised by Cr. W. Pool, Superintendent of the Fire Brigade, at a meeting of the Akaroa Borough Council. He said that m the daytime only three members of the brigade were available in the event of a fire, as all other members of the brigade were working outside the town. ■ This placed the brigade in a poor position if a fire occurred. In view of the position, the Mayor (Mr Davis) suggested that the foreman and assistant-foreman (Messrs J. Truman and R. Keegan) should be attached to the brigade for fire-fighting purposes if their services were required. He said that both these men had had experience with the brigade and had helped at fires on several occasions. It was decided that the mayor should interview the two men. The usual grant of £ls was made to the Akaroa Coronation Library. A claim for power charge, made by the Banks Peninsula dental clinic committee, was approved by the council. A motion of thanks was passed to Cr. W. A. Newton for providing a lawnmower for use at the Green Point memorial grounds. The finance report stated that receipts since last meeting were £389 4s 7d, balance at bank. £239 11s 2d; and accounts approved for payment, £544 18s 3d. The Mayor (Mr F. Davis) presided.
