SANATORIUM STAFF

DIRECTION BY MANPOWER OFFICER NUBSING AIDS STILL NEBBED Direction of women to employment at the Cashmere Sanatorium by; the' Christchurch Manpower Officer will, it. is expected, help considerably in oyel 1 * ■ coming the present difficulties- in , taining staff. The secretary kjthjb' North Canterbury Hospital Alex. Prentice) told a report# oW. “The Press" yesterday that although'.' the staff position was better there was - still little hope of opening-the "MW upper block of the institution on Its ,*, completion, which is now only- a mat* ter of days. ' j The matron (Miss A. P. Watt) inter* viewed eight women suggested by UW j Manpower Officer, and the result was y that five were directed to the Sana*' torium for domestic duties. Miss Watt. ’ said yesterday that in the last two days the institution had obtained tM services of two nursing aids and two j maids. This brought the staff for the >: sanatorium and the Coronation Hospi*. r tal almost up to full strength. With the five women directed by the Man*' | power Officer there would be sufficient ; domestic staff for the riew j block, but; seven nursing aids were still needed.. Although the extra accommodation * : of the new block was needed more than ever, it was impossible to con*, sider opening it until the necessary , nursing and domestic staff were avail*. ,» able and actually in residence, saw Miss Watt. She had had an encourag-. ing number of inquiries from women interested in the offer : .of employment, and she was hopeful that the full Stan requirements would soon be met. The Christchurch branch of the Keo Cross Society has been endeavouring to assist the North Canterbury Hospl*- : tal Board to obtain nursing staff. Mr Prentice said the branch was cooperating with the hospital authorities and hoped to direct those of its mem* bers able to accept full-time employ* ment to service at the sanatorium.
