FREEZING-WORKS LABOUR

MANPOWER SURVEY STEPS TO MEET SHORTAGE Making a survey of manpower for the coming season in the freezing industry in the Canterbury district, an official of the maopower division of the National Service Department is visiting Christchurch. A national council of freezing-indus-try manpower utilisation has been set up, and, as a result of its deliberations, the National Service Department has called on its district manpower officers to co-operate with the unions and companies in a survey. So as to assess the manpower which will be available for the coming season, the investigations are taking the following lines:—Listing other men who can be made available by release or direction from their present employment; the number of men who have gone into the Army under permanent mobilisation; the number of men who have gone into the Army for limited service and will be released before the season begins; the number of men who cannot be traced. The department hopes by this survey to arrive at an estimate of the deficiency of manpower in the industry. There was a shortage of young labour last season, and the indications are that the same position will obtain this season.
