GOODS ACCEPTABLE FOR TRANSIT LIST RECEIVED IN CITY Reduction in railway goods services in the North Island because of the coal shortage will affect both North Island and South Island consignees, A list of goods which will be accepted for transit in the north was received yesterday by the District Railways Traffic Manager at Christchurch, Mr G. H. McLean. . , .. , With the list was a statement that goods accepted for carriage, ex coastal shipping, would be required to conform to the restrictions, which is interpreted to mean that goods shipped from the South Island for carriage by rail in the north will have to conform to the list. . , . The list of goods to be accepted for transit is:—Military equipment and stores of all descriptions; materials for use in defence construction; livestock traffic, to be strictly limited to animals required for slaughter (livestock other than animals for slaughter will not be accepted for carriage); lime and manures for agricultural purposes, consigned direct to farmers, and chaff for feeding livestock, the quantities in every instance to be limited to the minimum to cover bare necessities; chaff, animal foods and fodder; lime, salt and meat bags for freezing works; lime for tanneries and gasworks; hides and skins, green; posts, stakes, wire, seeds and agricultural machinery consigned direct to farmers; natural manures; returned empties (such as fish boxes, fish casks, butter and cheese boxes, etc.) to be used for conveyance of foodstuffs and other essentials, shocks for making fruit cases, butter boxes, cheese crates, and casks; foodstuffs such as meat (fresh and preserved), fish, flour, sugar, jam, tea, coffee; household requisites such as kerosene, soap, lamps, brushware; milk, cream, butter and cheese; machinery and supplies for freezing works; grain (for immediate gristing), potatoes, and other vegetables and fruit; coal, coke and firewood; household furniture and effects of persons moving, but not new furniture; benzine and other motor spirits, oils and greases for lubricating purposes; any other articles of a similar description under the headings already named: frozen meat and wool consigned direct to ships for shipment; rabbits for freezing and canning; beer, wines and spirits; oil for spraying purposes; gas in cylinders for welding purposes, repair parts for motor vehicles, agricultural machinery, etc.; travellers’ samples limited to lewt.
