BISHOP DISCUSSES SOCIAL EVILS

* TASKS FOR THE CHURCH

(P.A.) AUCKLAND, September 15. "The free sale of mechanical aids to prevent conception is definitely leading to an increase in vice,” said the Bishop of Auckland (the Rt. Rev. W. J. Simkin), at the opening of the Auckland Synod. “The crime of abortion is not only a sin against God; it is a factor moving in the direction of an increase in the sexual evil. “The incidence of venereal disease, which is increasing to such an alarming extent, is not only an immediate evil, but a potential evil which may be transmitted to future generations.” The consumption of alcoholic liquor by mere children and quite young people was leading to a weakening of moral fibre and an inability to resist temptation in pther directions. Against these things it- was the duty of the Church to speak without reserve, hesitation, or fear. The remedy lay in finding the fullest opportunity for boys and girls to grow up in the service of God. of His Church, and of their fellow beings, in service, not directed by older people, but by themselves. The Bishop exhorted Synod to consider the vital question of the home life of New Zealand, for there lay the greatest opportunity for reform.
