PLANS FOR NEW SEA WALL

♦ PROPOSED ALTERATIONS REJECTED A proposal to alter the plans of the new sea wall in Moncks Bay, Redcliffs, was rejected by the Sumner Borough Council at its meeting last night. The meeting on Monday mgnt was adjourned to permit the council, as a body, to inspect the work yesterday morning. T In speaking for the alteration, Cr. L. Gant said that he had received offers amounting to £l2O, and felt that so wholehearted was the response, even more would be available. The building of the structure according to the proposed alterations, would cost £1876 10s, reported the engineer. The Mayor (Mr J. E. Tait) said that he had interviewed the Public Works Engineer (Mr T. G..Beck) during the day and had been advised by him not to depart from the foundations of the old wall. „ , . Cr. W. J. Duff: It is difficult to try to oppose such technical advice from such a source, but even so, large rock lying on the site has not sunk during the last eight to 10 years. Expert advice makes one stop and consider more fully. A , The Mayor: The present structure deals in hundreds of pounds, the other proposal in thousands. Cr. Machin said that as the council had discussed the project fully before the work was commenced, and had decided to carry out what was urgently required for making an immediate protection, he would move that the council confirm the previous resolution made after receiving advice from Mr Beck, the'' Borough Engineer (Mr George Harper) and others; the present work to be regarded as an urgent practical measure for immediate protection but would not be held to be the final decision of the council, so that at a suitable time improvements could be undertaken. Crs. L. Gant and F. Murdoch moved as an amendment that the wall between the boatsheds and Simpson’s corner be built out for a distance of four and a half chains, eight feet from the tramlines, inside measurement, the rest of the wall being built on'the existing foundations. Cr. Murdoch said that this would cost a proportion of £520 on the figures before the council and would give the required clearance for this main part of the bay. With the £l2O already offered the balance could be met without strain. The amendment was lost on the casting vote of the Mayor and the motion was carried, also on his casting vote, the present plans to be adhered to.
