REMITS FOR COUNCIL DISCUSSED
ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY AT TIMARU Remits to be discussed at a forthcoming meeting of the South Island Council of Acclimatisation Societies were considered at a meeting of the South Canterbury Acclimatisation Society held.lat TiiftSfU'' 6hV Saturday afternoon. " A proposal that the fee for fishing licences issued by North Island societies should be increased from 25s to 30s provoked a lively discussion. The chairman (Mr J. McDonald) explained that the proposal meant that anglers from the South Island, • who wished to fish in the North Island, would have to pay an extra fee of 5s to have their South Island licences endorsed. “Why* should we have to pay extra in the North Island?” asked Mr J. Stevens. ‘T think we should oppose this proposal.” “The North Island should run their own affairs, and the South Island theirs,” said Mr W. M. Metcalf. It was decided to oppose the increase in licence fees. On the motion of Mr B. Timmings, it was agreed that the society would not support a proposal to give fishing licences for 12s 6d to youths aged from 16 to 18 years. The meeting agreed to support a remit asking the Government for full information about fisheries research. Support was also requested from the society for the establishment of a South Island vermin control board. “A control board couldn’t do more than we do ourselves,” commented Mr F. W. Agnew. “The finance would have to come from us,” said Mr W. Kidd. It was decided not to support the proposal. Accounts amounting to £23 were passed for payment. The society’s bank balance was stated to be £477, compared with £606 in 1941.
