APPEALS AGAINST SERVICE
DECISIONS BY BOARD Difficulties in the vegetable-growing industry were ventilated before the Armed Forces Appeal Board yesterday morning when a number of appeals against service for employees were made by market gardeners and orchardists. It was stated that the labour problem was as acute in the Industry as in any other business, and that the perishable nature of crops and the dependence on suitable weather over the rush periods of sowing and harvesting made it imperative that experienced men should be available. The board agreed that the vegetable position was likely to be desperate if any further set-backs were placed in the way of producers, and most appellants had their reouests granted. Mr J. S. Barnett presided, and with him were Messrs S. L. Wright and G. T Thurston.' Mr J. J. McLaughlin (secretary) represented the Crown, and Captain S. Bowron the military authorities.
