NEW HOME CENTRE SCHEME
* COURSE FOR HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS
EXPERIMENT AT RANGIORA
A survey of the home-centre course for girls at the Rangiora High School was presented to the monthly meeting of the board of governors this week by the principal (Mr J. E. Strachan), reading an article he had written for the Education Gazette, at the request ok the Education Department. The course, which is planned as a threeyear course, occupying four hours a week, was introduced some time ago to take the place of technology as a subject for girls. It has three main series, the service of the home, the refinement of the home, and the family as a social unit. These are divided into several sections, which are approached by way of projects and systematic studies. In the preparation of the projects, the girls have an opportunity to study the world’s work, social changes, the progress of science and invention, and also developments in artistic crafts. Supplementing the regional survey, projects and systematic studies, the course provides for housecraft practice, including attendance at the nursery school. Those who want to specialise in home life take, in addition, the professional homecrafts course. The boys are still following the technology course. Mr Strachan said, but their teachers are asking for a thematic treatment that will harmonise it better with the girls' course. “It is too early yet to make any estimate of the success of the course,” the principal added. “The girls and their teachers are certainly interested in it, and they are becoming critical of a supply system that does not so much meet needs as exploit them. Mrs Everyman probably knows that most of the world’s work finds its ultimate use in providing food, clothing, shelter, and the refinements of the home. The homes of the people provide the best measure of the quality of national life, a much better measure, indeed, than the balance of trade.”
Approval of the article was expressed by members of the board.
