REFINING OF OIL
♦ REPRESENTATIONS TO GOVERNMENT
“Recently, in view of the loss of the domestic market for refined oil arising out of petrol rationing, wide representations have been made to the Government on the subject. These representations have been directed towards the arranging of purchase by the Government of oil refined by local refineries," states a letter from Mr D. I. Macdonald, secretary of the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation, received by the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association. “Up to the present time,” the letter adds, no general success has been achieved, but I have arranged for the oil advisory committee of the Stores Control Board to give full consideration to the representations made. As a result, jit its meeting held yesterday, the committee has decided to ascertain the possibility of Air Force crank case oil being satisfactorily refined and taken back by the Government.
“The Stores Control Board proposes to ascertain the technical features of each company’s operations and subject these to technical scrutiny with a view to finding /Whether satisfactory results will be obtained.”
The secretary of the Canterbury Association (Mr R. T. Alston) said yesterday that one large Christchurch firm was already refining the oil referred to, and holding a large surplus stock.
