AIR RAIDS ON MALTA

ISLAND HAS HAD 1200 ALARMS LONDON. January 13. Two enemy fighters were shot down while escorting bombers on a raid on Malta to-day. Some of the bombers got through the defences, and their bombs killed a few civilians and did slight damage to property. The civilians of Malta are standing up sturdily to the continued Axis air attacks, and they are deriving great satisfaction from the anti-aircraft barrage, which is described as a wall of steel round the island. Up to January 10, the people of Malta had experienced 1200 air raid alarms and at least 80 enemy aeroplanes had been brought down, while many others had been damaged. Air raid casualties had been light because the. people, within two minutes, had been able to take shelter.
