ESTABLISHMENT OF REPUBLIC

Move in South Africa INDEPENDENCE SOUGHT (Received January 15, 1.30 a.m.) (U.P.A.) CAPE TOWN, January 14. Dr, Malan, Leader of the Re-United National Party in South Africa, introduced a motion in Parliament calling for the immediate establishment of a Christian national republic divorced from the Crown and Empire, taking full account of the language and cultural rights of both sections of the European population and independent of any foreign country. General Smuts moved an amendment affirming the continuance of the Union’s membership of the British Commonwealth and strongly disapproving of the raising in war time of issues involving a fundamental change in the constitution. General Smuts declared that the Nationalists wanted a republic in which all differing from them would be deprived of citizenship. He would fight such a movement to the bitter end.
