CELLAR SHELTERS AT WAIMATE
As Waimate is not a vulnerable area and is regarded as unlikely to be attacked, no steps are being taken by the authorities to provide shelter trenches, as in other towns. A survey has shown that accommodation for several hundred perions is offered by the cellars beneath all of the four hotels, the C.F.C.A. (both drapery and grocery departments), Newall and Jones’s premises, and beneath the silo at the flourmill, the latter being especially commodious. A warning has been issued to the public to- lie flat on the ground if no shelter is convenient, or if indoors to remain there. The need to take these precautions will be signalled by the ringing of the fire bell and church bells, at one minute intervals, and all clear being sounded by continuous ringing of the bells for three minutes.
