FIRST TWO MONTHS’ KILLINGS

The official figures of killings for the present season at the Dominion’s freezing works from October 1 till November 29, as issued by the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board, show that lamb killings total 383,370 carcases, compared with 156,835 carcases for the first two months of the 1940-41 season. Wether mutton killings are 30,658 carcases, and ewe mutton killings 10,252 carcases, compared with 1050 and 3240 carcases respectively for the same period last season. Details of the lamb and mutton killings in the North and South Islands, with figures for the previous season in parenthesis are as follows: North Island —Lamb (c/cs.), 328,079 (156,810); wether mutton (c/cs.), 29,945 (1046); ewe mutton (c/cs.), 10,038 (3240). South Island—Lamb (c/cs.), 55,291 (25); wether mutton (c/cs.), 713 (4); ewe mutton (c/cs.), 214 (nil). Frozen beef production is 9592 qrs. compared with 14,257 qrs. last season. Porker killings total 16,840 carcases, an increase of 13,741, while baconers total 56,734 carcases, a decrease of 10,713.

Mosgiel Woollens were steady with buyers and business at £lO 15s, New Zealand Breweries had dealings at 35s 3d and 355, and there were further buyers at 34s 6d, but sellers were reticent. Sellers of Broken Hill Proprietary reduced their limits to 37s 6d, but buyers wanted 365. Sellers of Colonial Sugar came down to £49. Hays, Ltd., which have been off the sales list for some considerable time, changed hands at 30s 6d, market closing 30s buyers, 32s 6d sellers,/.
