WISH TO AVOID CONTEST

——* RICCARTON BOROUGH ELECTION

STATEMENT BY CITIZENS’ ASSOCIATION

Dr. R. Hepburn, president of the Riccarton Citizens’ Association, said yesterday that because of the present state of emergency in the war situation, the association wished, if possible, to avoid a contested election for the vacancy on the Riccarton Borough Council caused by the death of Mr F. George. ‘‘We had a candidate available, but Mr S. B. Kershaw, the second highest candidate at the last election, had lodged a nomination and had definitely declined to withdraw,” Dr. Hepburn said. “In the circumstances the association had decided not to nominate a candidate, but this was not to be' taken as a precedent for the future.”
