AIR RAID WARDENS
— « — APPEAL FOR VOLUNTEERS
An appeal to responsible persons to volunteer for duty as air raid wardens under the Emergency Precautions Services was made yesterday by the Mayor (Mr E. H. Andrews). He said that a report presented to the meeting of the executive of the organisation showed a disturbing position, only 53 appointments having so far been made to positions that required more than 1000 for complete staffing. Of this 1000 about 625 are required in the city. In seven school districts in the city there have been no appointments of district wardens. These districts are Avonside Girls’ High, East Christchurch. Phillipstown, Richmond Primary, Shirley Primary, Sydenham, and Christchurch West High. These districts cover an area of about 2510 acres, with a population of 32,000.
The intention is that an air raid warden will be a responsible member of the public chosen to be a leader and adviser of his neighbours in a district or "sector’’—a street or small group of streets—in which he is known and respected. Their duties involve a certain amount of training in first aid, fire extinction, and anti-gas work for each district warden, who in turn appoints and instructs his deputy, senior and sub-wardens. To fill the gaps in personnel it has been suggested that the women’s fire patrols of the General Service Corps, trained and working under the Fire Controller, should be used, and the committee responsible has taken steps to put this suggestion into effect. COOPER SHEARING MACHINES The Cooper Little Wonder Machine at £lO3 is easily portable with magnificent engine. The electric two-stand machine at £92 10s installed is a lifetime job.
