IN THE LONG VACATION

WORK SOUGHT BY STUDENTS PLAN ON NATIONAL BASIS Full arrangements covering university students throughout the country have been made this year to find work for university men and women looking for work in the long vacation. With the co-operation of the various Students’ Associations, forms have been filled in by students stating the type of work they want to do, the period they will be free in which to do it, and the district in which they wish to work. Under the arrangement, which, it is understood, is being worked through the State Placement Service, a Canterbury medical student from the University of Otago could make arrangements, now, in Dunedin to take a job in Canterbury—at whatever type of work he wished. Jobs this year, with the shortage of labour through the war, are not expected' to be hard to find. Many of the students are seeking outdoor work, shearing or general farm work for January, February, and March being a popular choice, and harvesting also appealing to many. On the specially-printed forms the students set out the course they are taking, and their qualifications for the jobs they seek. Many of them have done holiday seasonal work before. The, great majority of jobs sought both by men and women are in the outdoors. Many of the girls seek land army jobs, for which some of them have excellent qualifications, and others again are willing to go pea-picking or fruit-picking and packing. It is understood that this is the first time a national attempt has been made, with a Government department officially concerned in it, to organise the potential working capacity of students who wish to earn money in the long vacations.
