WEST COAST STORM DAMAGE
♦ OTIRA GORGE BLOCKED (F O O R.) GREYMOUTH, June 11. Greater damage than was generally anticipated resulted from yesterdays storm on the West Coast, which continued overnight and again to-day in a much milder form. Besides minor damage from flooding and erosion, a portion of a traffic bridge was • washed away at Ikamatua, and protection works in that district were also considerably damaged. There were also numerous small interruptions to electric power supplies, broken windows from the force of the gale, and loss of wireless aerials. The heavy rain caused several slips between Bealey and Arthur’s Pass, and the Otira Gorge road is blocked to traffic. The Lewis Pass route and all other main roads are now clear. This morning the wind veered round to the south and the abatement of the heavy rain and the north-westerly gale overnight brought about a big improvement, which lessened the possibilities of a serious flood. The rainfall at Greymouth for the 24 hours ending at 9 o’clock this morning was 95 points, making a total of 2.8 inches for the last two days.
