OBITUARY
MR S. C. DIXON The death occurred in Christchurch yesterday of Mr Sidney Charles Dixon, for many years manager of the retail branch of Ashby, Bergh and Company, Ltd. Mr Dixon, who was 64 years of age, was well known and warmly respected in the business community of Canterbury, A son of the late Mr Charles Dixon, of Ashburton, he was born and educated in Mid-Canterbury, where he entered the hardware business as a young man. His early training was with John Orr and Company, Ashburton, and on coming to Christchurch he was in turn a member of the staff' of Congreve’s and of Edward Reese, Ltd. He joined the staff of Ashby. Bergh arid Company 28 years ago, and for nearly the whole of that period was manager of the retail branch of the firm in High street. He had a severe illness some time ago. but in spite of indifferent health he carried on his business duties until a few days ago. Mr Dixon had many friends in the sporting organisations of the city. As a young man he was a keen lawn tennis player, and he was a prominent member of the Avonside Club. Later he became interested in bowls, and was secretary, treasurer,' and president of the Christchurch Club at various times. He was a Past-Master of the Canterbury Masonic Lodge and a Past District Grand Warden. A member of the congregation of the East Belt Methodist Church for very many years, he held the offices of trustee and society steward. He leaves a widow (a daughter of the late Rev. John Orchard), four daughters, and one son.
