THE PURCHASING POINTS OVERSEAS DEMAND The purchasing points of sheep sold at the fair have been much more widely , flung than the selling sources. Sheep have been purchased for shipment to the Argentine and Australia, as well as to practically all the provinces of New Zealand. The overseas demand at the fair has been largely for Corrledales, but -the demand from Australia, mostly privately supplied, has been keen foi Romneys, Border Leieesters, Southdowns, Ryelands, and English Leieesters, In normal times, as a matter of fact, there are very few parts of the sheepraising world to which New Zealand sheep have not been exported. North America, the Falkland Islands, the various Republics of South America, Kenya Colony. South Africa, and Japan can be added to the list of countries just mentioned. These have not been for experiment by buyers, but represent a steady and yearly business, in most cases based on the satisfaction inspired by the initial shipments. These outlets, of course, are very rarely supplied by sheep purchased at the fair, but they are from the same flocks and raised by the same breeders. This international demand for them emphasises what local buyers may be inclined to assess rather lightly—i.e.. the quality of the country’s stud flocks. These facts should impress die sheep-breeding community with the wisdom of exploiting this readily available source of supply to the utmost to maintain and improve the quality of their breeding flocks. Whatever the need in the past for striving after quality in our meat exports that need is doubly as strong to-cay. Up till a few years ago lamb fatteners could rest assured that whatever was sent home, within reason as far as quality was concerned, would be accepted. This very comforting position was rapidly disappearing just before the war. Concern was developing in wellinformed quarters then that the progress made in numbers and quality of Australian lamb production, and in the favourably situated country of South America, would eliminate the monopoly of the Home lamb market which this Dominion had occupied for so many years. This competition has ccme nearer since the outbreak of war When normal conditions are resumed we will have more direct evidence of the importance of thjs aspect of quality. It may be considered something of far cry from the question of lamb quality to that of the stud ram sale, but actually the one is closely related to the other —the objective of lamb quality cannot be attained unless the lessons of the stud fair are learned. At the flock ram fair each year there is frequently a good disposal of rams at the upset price of £2 2s or less, whilst another two or three guineas would buy types infinitely superior. This indicates that the unique position this country occupies as a breeder of quality sheep is poorly recognised by some flockmasters. Instead of buying the cheapest rams at the flock fair it would be sound policy to buy some of the cheapest at the stud fair. Two or three years’ service of a stud ram would improve the quality of the average small breeding flock. THE FAIR ENTRY ORDER OF SALE The sale to-morrow will commence at 10 o’clock. Two sections will operate simultaneously. The breeds will be offered in the following order:— A Sale Southdown Border Leicester Ryeland Suffolk Shropshire B Sale Corriedale Romney Marsh ..
