Croix de Guerre Awarded.—Francois Beaudoin, a member of the French Air Force, is the third member of the Chamber of Deputies to be awarded the Croix de Guerre for gallantry.— Paris, June 9. Bed Cross Fund Growing.—The evacuation of Dunkirk and the intensification of the fighting in France are bringing thousands of small subscriptions, in addition to others of larger amounts, to the Lord Mayor’s Red Cross Fund. On Friday the fund stood at £1,645,000. Last week more than £90,000 was subscribed. Heavy losses of ambulances and medical stores have been sutffefed and the Lord Mayor is asking for further help to make good these losses.— London, June 9. Check on “Poaching” of Labour.— The order relating to the restriction of engagement made by the Ministry of Labour and National Service to prevent the “poaching” of labour comes into operation to-day.—London, June 9. By-Election in, Britain.—The North Newcastle by-election resulted: Sir Cuthbert Headlam (unofficial Conservative), 7380 votes; Second-Lieutenant H.' Grattan-Doyle (official Conservative), a son of Sir Nicholas GrattanDoyle, who resigned his seat, gained 2982 votes. Only 21.8 per cent, of the electors voted.—London, June 9. Woman Shot by Sentry—A 19-year-old Mansfield girl, Elizabeth Smith, was fatally shot in the back when her automobile failed to answer a military sentry’s challenge on a main road in the Midlands. A sentry on the outskirts of Nottingham fired on an automobile containing two Army officers. One was wounded. —London, June 9. '
