RELAY RACE TO AKAROA

ENTRIES TO CLOSE ON MAY 13 ——■ ~ i CROSS-COUNTRY COMMITTEE MEETS Entries for the .centennial relay race from the Sign of the Takahe to Akaroa will close on May, 13, in accordance with a decision reached at a meeting of the cross-country committee of the Canterbury Amateur Athletic Centre over which Mr J. G. Brown presided. The race will be held on Saturday, June 1, at the King’s Birthday week-end. The honorary secretary (Mr E. L. Cordery) reported that with the prospect of a hiS entry from clubs in other 1 centres the sub-committee appointed to make arrangements planned to charter a, fleet of buses from the Railways Department to accommodate visiting runners. This measure would be necessary because of the petrol restrictions, but representations were bing made to the local Oil Fuel Committee for provision for local cams and officials, as to accommodate all in buses would be impracticable and too costly. ' \ It was the declared wish of the Minister for Internal Affairs (the Hon. W. E. Parry) that sporting- fixtures should not be cancelled in war time. This was the major sporting event on the ■ official centennial programme. Keen and active interest was being taken in other centres. , , The committee decided to undertake the publishing of a special centennial programme for the race. . A resolution of appreciation of the services of Mr L. C. H. Suckling, who has retired from the, office of honorary treasurer, was carried. . „ The inter-club competition has been arranged for teams of four, with three to count in A and B grades with one round only.
