BASKETBALL
SATURDAY’S RESULTS
HIGH SCORES IN SENIOR MATCHES
St. Mary’s had a decisive win over Technical on Saturday, scoring 27 goals to Technical’s 7. The superiority of St, Mary’s was apparent from the beginning of the match and the team completely dominated the play in all thirds. The Technical defenders gave their opponents practically no opposition, and the St. Mary’s forwards, O. Wheately and J. Felton employed perfect timing in their court play and easily reached good positions for shooting. O.- Johansen, the newcomer to the St. Mary’s team is also a reliable court player, but is inclined to hold the ball for a _long shot where a pass in would carry 'less risk. In their centre and goal thirds the Technical players fought well but were outclassed. With excellent timing A. Cassidy opened up the St. Mary’s centre play, and valuable interceptions by M. Scott repeatedly returned the ball to her goal third. .Consequently the Technical forwards were seldom in possession. Although Digby’s scored 29 goals against the 16 goals of Training College B, the team played poorly, probably because of fielding only eight players. The' gap in the Digby’s defence gave Training College many opportunities, but shots were missed frequently and N. Dick and P. Judd never failed to return the ball to Digby’s centre. The Digby’s forwards, N. Smith and C. Swan, shot many spectacular goals, but M. Phillips was overworked at the attack line and was forced to send many long passes to the shooting area. . The Students versus University match which ended in a win for University by 20 goals to 13. was spoilt by personal contact on the part of Students, particularly in its goal third. University had the advantage in positional play. Students attacking without system and being poor on defence. Training College A defeated West Old Girls by 21 goals to 18 in an uninteresting match. No formulated movements were employed and the play was generally ragged. Results were:— Senior—St. Mary’s A 27, Technical A 7: Students 13, University A 20; Training College A 21.
